Wilber Shaw was the first driver to win consecutive 500s in 1939 and 1940. He persuaded Tony Hulman to purchase the track after it had fallen in dilapidated shape from not being used during WWII. He was appointed president of the speedway and transformed into the fabulous event it is today.
